Designing a Headquarters with Light and Space

Inspired by the curve between the bright and dark sides of dawn, the architects sought to sculpt the form of the building using light. The result is a headquarters that embodies an open attitude and a delicate working atmosphere.

The six-floor building, located at Lingang economic development zone in China, covers a total area of 12,000 square meters. Its curve layout and expanding shape embrace the entrance square, creating a visually striking presence. The curtain wall system adds to the building's simplicity and decency, while allowing ample natural light to pour in.

Stone, a natural material known for its slight differences and integrality of each piece, plays a significant role in the design. It creates a sense of elegance and serves as the main theme of the building, reflecting the characteristics of a headquarters office.

The ground floor of the building is elevated by 2 meters, emphasizing its vertical scale. Grass slopes connect it with the entrance square, providing different layers of site experience. The offset outline of the ground and top floors creates two corridors of grey space, encouraging communication and increasing the interestingness of the interior.

The facade of the building is enriched to form a classic "three-segment" proportion, adding to its visual appeal. A large area of glass curtain wall and horizontal aluminum louvers filter the light, creating a play of light and shadow that brings romance to the rational building.

The design team, led by architect Yi Xu, included Chen Xiao, Xu Junfeng, Li Meng, Cao Zhen, Wang Dengdeng, and Timothy. Together, they overcame the challenge of balancing simplicity and delicacy in the design language, focusing on the core issues of layout and function.

The Machinery Park Headquarters Building, completed in 2016, is a testament to the power of light and space in creating a unique and inspiring workplace. Its innovative design and attention to detail have earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2019.
